The word “vegan” was coined in 1944 by Donald Watson, founder of the Vegan Society, by combining the first three and last two letters of vegetarian. The vegan lifestyle, a practice of abstaining from the consumption of foods or products derived from animals, is one of the strictest forms of vegetarianism. All of Sheffa’s products are vegan. But you don’t have to be vegan to enjoy tasty vegan foods and vegan snacks! Maybe you’ve heard of the Meatless Monday movement, where non-vegetarians are adding one or more vegetarian meals to their weekly diets? How about Vegan “Vednesday”? Well, it works if you say it with a Swedish accent! You can start by simply rotating vegan snacks into your diet. But remember to choose healthy foods and healthy vegan snacks that are also whole food based and full of fiber and nutrients.

What’s the Deal with Whole Food High Protein Snacks?

01.13.13    |   Category: Snacks & Bars    |   Tags:

Protein performs countless invaluable functions in the body, from metabolism to tissue growth and repair. Proteins from plant sources are considered “incomplete”, with few exceptions like soybeans, quinoa, amaranth and buckwheat, but nearly all whole-foods contain protein. The solution for the plant centered diet? Combine different sources of protein with your meals and eat high protein snacks. Sheffa’s products are a great combination of plant-based foods that are a rich source of complete vegetarian protein. We don’t isolate protein and add it back, so your body will like our whole food based high protein snacks and Salad Sprinkles. When you eat foods in their whole forms, you get the benefit of all the nutrients that work together synergistically. Our idea of healthy protein snacks doesn’t contain isolated soy protein and other stuff. We like our protein rich snacks and foods as close to nature as possible.

Why Choose Healthy Protein Snacks?

What’s the deal with protein, and do we really need healthy protein snacks? You may feel you get plenty of protein in your diet. But the problem is – if you live in the United States or any other industrialized society, you also probably have too many carbs. Choosing high protein snacks from whole food vegetarian sources is a great option, along with vegetables and fruits. Not only do vegetarian healthy protein snacks ensure you are getting enough protein, but they give your body a break from the snacks that are pure carb. Sheffa’s snacks are balanced – whole food at its best.

Are Your SnacksProtein Rich Snacks?

Sheffa Foods has a line of protein rich snacks, Savory Bars and Salad Sprinkles. All of our products are made from vegetarian sources and are whole food based. In fact, they are vegan, gluten free and kosher. They offer a great balance between protein, carbs, healthy fats and fiber. But we didn’t leave out the taste. What are Savory Snacks?

12.25.12    |   Category: Snacks & Bars    |   Tags:

The word savory is rooted in the meaning of “tasty” or “flavorful”, but lately it’s used to describe “salty or spicy” flavors as opposed to sweet. Essentially, savory can be seen as the opposite of sweet or “sweet-free” when we’re talking about food. Thus, savory snacks are snacks that aren’t sweet.   (more…)

The phrase “sugar free snacks” is likely to conjure up thoughts of artificially sweetened snacks that taste, well…artificial. You wouldn’t eat them unless you had to. But “sugar free” also means without sugar and therefor not sweet or savory. While nobody is forcing us to seek out sweet snacks, most of us have a sweet-tooth that sometimes screams for attention. Sheffa’s Vegan Bars are The Cat’s Meow

12.21.12    |   Category: Snacks & Bars    |   Tags:

When we say “vegan bars”, we don’t mean a place where you can get a green juice or a sake-tini along with your tempeh burger. We mean vegan bars, as in granola bars, healthy snack bars and protein bars. Vegan is the strictest form of vegetarianism. Simply put, a vegan doesn’t consume anything that is of or by animals, including eggs and dairy, things that a standard vegetarian might eat because the animals are not killed. (more…)

While there are a lot of vegetarian snacks and prepared foods on the market, Sheffa Foods offers products that are vegetarian and healthy. Choose Low Sodium Snacks

12.14.12    |   Category: Snacks & Bars    |   Tags:

Sodium is essential to our bodies, but not in the amounts typically consumed with the Standard American Diet (SAD). The idea of using salt in cooking is to enhance the flavors of the food – salt is really not meant to be a flavor in and of itself! Very little salt is needed to brighten the taste of any food, but the food industry often uses excess salt to compensate for low quality ingredients. (more…)

America Loves “Salty Snacks”!

12.12.12    |   Category: Snacks & Bars    |   Tags:

The packaged food industry has a “salty snacks” category, and sales in this diverse classification have experienced steady increased growth with potato chips, tortilla chips, and snack nuts and seeds leading the way. This category might seem strange given the growing awareness around the amount of sodium we consume, and if we look at the nutrient tables of some of these salty snacks, you might think the food industry has us confused with horses that need “salt licks”. The Drama Behind Granola and Granola Bars

12.04.12    |   Category: Snacks & Bars    |   Tags:

Granola is often associated with the hippies of the 1960’s. So, granola and granola bars must have been invented by hippies. NOT! The invention of Granola, though originated as a health food, has very capitalistic roots dating back to the mid to late 1800’s. Think “granola wars”! (more…)

When we say “healthy bars”, we’re not talking about a bar where you can go and get a healthy drink, like a shot of wheat grass or organic vodka (is that healthy anyway?). We’re talking about cereal and snack bars, like the ever-popular granola bar. Healthy bars are loved for good reasons; they’re convenient and usually pretty tasty. (more…)
