The Drama Behind Granola and Granola Bars

Granola is often associated with the hippies of the 1960’s. So, granola and granola bars must have been invented by hippies. NOT! The invention of Granola, though originated as a health food, has very capitalistic roots dating back to the mid to late 1800’s. Think “granola wars”! Dr. James C. Jackson invented and trademarked “Granula” made from graham flour. Later, Dr. John Kellogg introduced a modified version using oats, which he named “granola” only after Dr. Jackson sued him for trademark infringement (Dr. Kellogg went on to create Kellogg’s cereal company and make a fortune). Much later came Granola bars with even more drama. Stanley Mason was considered the inventor of the granola bar until Herrick Kimball came along in the mid 1970’s claiming it was his brainchild. Whoa Nelly! Sheffa makes Savory Bars, like healthy granola bars, but without oats or any sweet flavors…and without the drama!

What’s in Your Healthy Granola Bars?

All people are created equal, but not all Granola Bars! There are granola bars and then there are Healthy Granola Bars. If the list of ingredients is very long and contains high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils or artificial this and preservative that, you might want to steer clear. Healthy Granola Bars should be nutritionally balanced, no more than 200 calories, less than 10 grams of sugar, less than 10 grams of fat from healthy sources like nuts, and some protein, fiber would also be a bonus. Sheffa’s Savory Bars are crunchy oat-free, gluten free snack bars that are also “sweet-free”. Like the Declaration of Independence, they’re born free!

Savory Vegan Granola Bars Make Their Debut

Granola bars aren’t just for breakfast. They’re often eaten as a snack, and because they’re convenient and lightweight, they provide quick energy for people on the move in the city or in the woods. Since granola bars were invented in the early 1900’s, countless variations have emerged: vegan granola bars, organic granola bars, breakfast bars, protein bars, meal-replacement bars, diet bars, sports bars – a bar for every occasion and every need! The ingredients and quality vary greatly, but one thing they all have in common is sugar or sugar substitutes. Sheffa makes Savory Bars without any sugars or sweeteners – they’re “sweet-free” for a savory change.
